The Snowmobile Preseason Checklist

Work through the fuel system, chaincase, coolant, carbides, track tension and spares before the first ride of the season, so the first cold morning is not the shakedown run.

By RideWell Garage Team·Published ·Updated

Sleds do not fail in the spring, when you would notice. They fail on the first cold morning of the season, forty minutes from the truck. Run this list in the garage in the fall and the first ride is a ride, not a shakedown.

Fuel and ignition

Fuel that sat all summer without stabilizer has gone stale and picked up moisture. Drain it, run fresh fuel through the system, and swap the plugs while you are there — a set of plugs is cheap next to a no-start in the cold.

Fluids and the chaincase

Change the chaincase oil and check the chain tension against the manual's spec. Check coolant level and, if you can, its freeze point — a weak mix is a cracked head waiting for a cold snap. On a four-stroke, change engine oil and the filter before storage ends rather than after, so the engine is not sitting on acidic used oil.

Wear items you ride on

These are the parts that quietly went to nothing at the end of last season:

  • Carbides and wear bars — replace them if the carbide is worn through to the bar
  • Hyfax slides — check thickness against the wear indicator and look for heat glazing
  • Track — inspect for missing lugs, cracked rods and damaged clips, then set tension and alignment to spec
  • Drive belt — check width and condition, and put the old serviceable one in the tunnel bag

Electrical and spares

Charge the battery and load-test it rather than trusting resting voltage. Check that the headlight, taillight, brake light and handwarmers all work before you need them in the dark.

Finish by packing the tunnel bag: spare belt, spare plugs, plug wrench, tow strap, and the tools that actually fit the fasteners on your machine.

Still not sure which part you need? Send us your year, make and model and we will confirm fitment before you order.
