Five Signs Your UTV Drive Belt Is Done
Slipping under load, a burnt smell, belt dust in the CVT housing, cracked cogs and a belt worn under spec — how to tell a UTV drive belt is finished before it strands you.

A CVT belt is a wear item, and it almost never fails without warning. Knowing what the warning looks like is the difference between swapping a belt in the garage and swapping one on the trail with a machine you have to ride home.
1. It slips under load
Engine RPM climbs but the machine does not accelerate with it, most obviously pulling out of a hole or towing uphill. A belt that slips is a belt that is glazed, stretched, or no longer being squeezed hard enough by the sheaves.
2. You can smell it
That sharp burnt-rubber smell after a hard pull is belt material cooking off. One episode of it after a deep mud hole is survivable. Smelling it on ordinary riding means the belt is on borrowed time.
3. Belt dust in the CVT housing
Pull the clutch cover and look. A light film is normal. A layer of black dust coating the housing and the sheaves means the belt is shedding fast, and that dust is also contaminating the friction surfaces it needs to grip.
4. Visible damage on the belt itself
Flex the belt backwards and look along both edges and the cog faces for:
- Cracks between the cogs, or cogs that are chipped or missing outright
- Frayed cords along either edge
- Hard, shiny, glazed side walls where the belt should look matte
- Any hourglassing — a belt that is visibly narrower in one section than another
5. It measures under spec
This is the one that turns judgment into a number. Measure the belt width with calipers at several points and compare it to the service limit in your manual — most belts have only a few millimetres of allowable wear from new. Under the limit, it is finished no matter how good it looks.
Carry the old belt as a trail spare once you have fitted the new one, and keep a fresh one on the shelf. Belt life on a hard-working machine is measured in a season, not in years.
